A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
