Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in federal court, targets the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
